Wisdom in Hands
By KD Smith
Sift together the dry -
Flour, soda, salt
Make a well
In the wooden bowl
Pour in the buttermilk
Slowly, slowly
Use a fork to
Blend in your shortening
Gently, Gently
Pull the flour into the milk
Too much touch
Will toughen the dough
Form into rounds
And place on the pan
Nana’s aged hands
Make light biscuits
Her hands taught
By her mother, taught
By her mother, taught
By hers -
Teaching mine now
I’ll teach the next.
Two ingredients
Never spelled out
But vitally important -
Love
And
Patience

Papaw’s Strawberries
By KD Smith
Ruby red in a sky-blue bowl
Strawberries, dew-kissed,
Fragrant and still warm
From the summer morning sun
Placed on the table by aged hands
Straight from the sandy garden
Guarded from deer by shining twisting tins
And a scarecrow that looked like Granny
Love wrapped up in sweet red fruit
Picked at the height of ripeness
Washed, sliced, and parceled out
For Papaw’s five little girls
